DeSoto ISD will observe National Red Ribbon Week at its campuses from October 23-31, 2024. Red Ribbon Week is a week of immersion around drug awareness and prevention of the request for students to remain drug-free.

According to justthinktwice.gov, Red Ribbon Week was founded in 1985 in honor of fallen Drug Enforcement Administration special agent, Enrique Camarena. When he was investigating some drug traffickers in Mexico, he was brutally murdered by the suspects. To honor him after he died, people started to wear red ribbons.

Today, millions across the country wear red ribbons and complete community tasks in honor of Camarena's sacrifice.

During this week our campuses will host several events and activities for students during the school day.  Check with your child’s campus about dress days designed to bring awareness to Red Ribbon Week, research and engagement opportunities, and other activities.

In 1988, the NFP sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the Red Ribbon catalyzes the mobilization of communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Since then, the campaign has reached millions of U.S. children and families. The National Family Partnership (NFP) and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver his message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign™.
