DeSoto High School boys’ basketball team is gearing up for another season as it kicks off its 2024-2025 campaign with a talented roster and high expectations.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Robert Wright and his skilled assistant coaches, Seneca Wall and Dwight Gentry, the DeSoto Eagles aim to build on the successes of last season.
Wright explained his expectations for the team to make a deep playoff run this year, having only missed out by one game.
“We’re looking to win a state championship this year,” said Wrigtitle since 2009.
DHS basketball programas a new bos’ squad along with Wright who was hired in June 2023, replacing Richard Bacon, who retired in April 2023.
“This year this team has had a full year with me,” said Wright who didn’t have a full year of coaching at DHS due to the time of year he was hired.
“This year’s team has been with me, and I was able to develop them.”
This year’s roster includes 6’7” senior Point Guard Cameron Paul, a four-star recruit garnering early attention through standout preseason performances in area invitationals against some of the state’s top talent along with Kayden Johnson, Blayke Cooke Bogar and Tymere Singleton, each of whom earned postseason superlative honors at the close of last season.
Wright previously coached for Carter High eight years where he garnered a winning record of 217-54 which included a state runner-up finish in 1995 and a state semifinal appearance in 2005.
“I’m looking forward to the team doing big things for DeSoto and put some more plaques on these walls,” said Wright.
The DHS boys’ basketball team have gone 1-1 as the season begins having won against Fort Worth Dunbar High School and losing to St. Raymond Boys School out of New York.
Next up for DeSoto will be the Crowley Invitational beginning on Nov. 21.
