Valerie Villacorta's journey from DeSoto High School valedictorian to a dedicated public servant exemplifies the spirit of Women's History Month, highlighting the impact of young women breaking barriers and shaping their communities. 
 In May 2022, Villacorta made history as DeSoto High School valedictorian, becoming one of the first Hispanic women to achieve this honor alongside salutatorian Ancela Soriano. Their simultaneous top rankings were unprecedented in the district's history. Villacorta's speech, delivered partly in Spanish, reflected her deep appreciation for her cultural heritage and aimed to resonate with all attendees.

Throughout her high school years, Villacorta distinguished herself as an unconventional, innovative, and critical thinker.  

Her numerous accolades included being a Pre-AP Scholar, AP Scholar, Dual Credit Scholar, and earning an associate of arts degree. She was also an active member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, and participated in the Collegiate Magnet Program. Villacorta's academic pursuits were driven by a desire to address the challenges faced by immigrant communities, inspiring her ambition to become a lawyer. 
 

Villacorta's dedication to serving her community led her to the University of Texas at Austin, where she majored in government and Mexican American and Latino studies, earning a certificate in Mexican American studies. Her commitment to public service continued after graduation when she joined the City of DeSoto's Community Service and External Affairs Department as a grants specialist. In this role, Villacorta supports the city's grant application process, demonstrating her passion for community development and resource allocation. 
 

Villacorta's story is a testament to the power of education, cultural pride, and community service. By breaking academic records and pursuing a career dedicated to public service, she not only honors her heritage but also paves the way for future generations of young women to aspire to leadership and impact. Her journey continues to inspire those around her, embodying the essence of Women's History Month.
