In honor of Asian Pacific Islander (API) Heritage Month this May, DeSoto Independent School District (ISD) proudly celebrates the richness and diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities within the district. As part of its commitment to inclusion and cultural awareness, DeSoto ISD recognizes the contributions, achievements, and presence of those who identify with the API culture, ensuring all students feel seen, heard, and valued.

“We are excited to celebrate Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we take pride in the diverse cultures represented within DeSoto ISD,” said DeSoto ISD Executive Director of Student Support Services Dr. Gene Morrow.  “As a district, we strive to create an inclusive space for all our scholars, but we also recognize that some cultures may not always feel fully seen or acknowledged. We believe it is critical to honor all cultures and provide our students with the opportunity to explore and appreciate the vast array of traditions and histories that shape our world.”

In line with its goal of preparing students for a culturally-expansive world, DeSoto ISD is actively working to foster environments that promote understanding, inclusivity, and respect for all cultures. The district recognizes that when educational institutions lead with inclusion and awareness, they help nurture empathy and respect in the next generation of leaders.

A key moment in this year’s observance of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month is the recognition of DeSoto High School’s 2025 Valedictorian, Evonne Foo, a DHS Early College High School scholar, who is the district’s first Asian American scholar to earn this prestigious honor. Foo, an outstanding student and leader, is also a finalist for the QuestBridge National College Match, with the potential to receive a scholarship package worth $320,000 toward tuition and other educational expenses at a QuestBridge partner institution.

Evonne Foo’s remarkable academic achievements, as well as her commitment to service and leadership, exemplify the kind of scholar DeSoto ISD strives to cultivate. Foo plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall to study medicine, where she intends to pursue her passion for helping others and contribute to the medical field.

“It’s truly an honor to be recognized as DeSoto High School’s first Asian American valedictorian,” said Foo. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my culture and for the support I’ve received from my family, peers, and teachers along the way. I hope my story can inspire other students to pursue their dreams, regardless of background or heritage.”

The celebration of Asian Pacific Islander Month not only honors the achievements of students like Foo but also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the diverse cultural traditions and histories that enrich the DeSoto ISD community.

“We are deeply proud of Evonne and the many other students who represent our district’s diverse cultures,” said Dr. Leon Darden, Director of the DeSoto High School Early College High School. “Celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month is just one way for us to embrace the cultures that shape our community, while also helping students develop the cultural competency they need to thrive in a global society.”

As part of its commitment to inclusion, DeSoto ISD continues to engage in conversations and educational opportunities that celebrate the varied histories, traditions, and contributions of all cultural groups. These efforts help build a more inclusive and culturally-aware environment, where all students are encouraged to learn, grow, and succeed.

DeSoto ISD invites students, families, and community members to join in celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and continue supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity, respect, and cultural understanding for all.
