DeSoto ISD Student Aron Handsome Named 2025 Student Hero by State Board of Education
DeSoto Independent School District proudly announces that Aron Handsome, a standout student at DeSoto High School, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Student Hero Award by the State Board of Education (SBOE) District 13. This prestigious honor recognizes students across Texas who demonstrate acts of kindness, charity, and selfless service toward others. Aron is one of just 15 students statewide chosen for this recognition.
The Student Hero Award, presented by the Texas State Board of Education, honors Texas public school students in grades K–12 who volunteer their time, talents, and hearts to better the lives of those around them. Only one student per board district is selected each year, making this award a rare and distinguished honor
Aron will be honored alongside other recipients at the SBOE general meeting on June 27, 2025, in Austin, Texas.
"This honor is a reflection of who Aron is—not just as a student, but as a person," said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools for DeSoto ISD. "He is the embodiment of our Triple A Experience—Academics, Arts, and Athletics—and a shining example of the type of well-rounded, community-minded leaders we are cultivating in DeSoto ISD."
A true example of balance, Aron is an Early College High School student who excels academically while also competing in both football and soccer for DeSoto High School. He’s known among his peers and teachers for his dedication, humility, and leadership both on and off the field.
Outside of school, Aron is deeply engaged in his church's youth department and takes pride in his role as a big brother. "Family is everything" is a sentiment Aron lives by, and it’s this strong foundation that continues to guide his character and actions.
Early College High School Director Dr. Leon Darden shared, "Aron’s heart for service and his dedication to excellence in all areas of his life is exactly what we hope to inspire in every DeSoto ISD student. He represents the best of our community, and we are incredibly proud of him."
The Student Hero Award celebrates those who go beyond academics and extracurriculars to make meaningful impacts in the lives of others. Aron’s recognition serves as a testament to DeSoto ISD’s holistic approach to student development, where success is measured not only by grades and performance but by character, compassion, and community engagement.
Rodgers, added, "It’s students like Aron who remind us why we invest in programs that nurture the whole child. His achievement reflects the district’s commitment to developing leaders with both intellect and integrity."
