As DeSoto Independent School District prepares to welcome students for the 2025–26 academic year, its flagship campus is entering a new era under the leadership of Principal Leon Darden. With a bold vision and a deep commitment to student success, Darden has introduced a campus-wide theme for the year: “Accountability Over Everything.” The initiative emphasizes intentional excellence and shared responsibility among students, staff and families.

“At DeSoto High School, we believe that excellence is intentional,” Darden shared in his welcome letter to stakeholders. “We are calling on every student, staff member and stakeholder to rise to the standard of personal responsibility, academic integrity and collective success.”

Under Darden’s leadership, the school is prioritizing rigorous instruction, student-centered engagement and improved academic outcomes. Core academic goals include expanding access to Advanced Placement and dual credit courses, strengthening literacy and numeracy instruction, and implementing data-driven interventions to support student growth across all grade levels.

Student accountability will play a critical role in campus culture. Expectations include arriving prepared with a growth mindset, turning in assignments on time, demonstrating integrity and reflecting on feedback to grow. “Our educators are committed to providing support, guidance and opportunity,” Darden noted, “but the responsibility to engage, grow and achieve rests in the hands of each learner.”

For staff, accountability means embracing innovation in instruction, assessment and relationships. Teachers are encouraged to use real-world problems, project-based learning and student voice to drive engagement and deepen ownership. “Innovation is not optional,” Darden wrote. “It is an accountability call to our teachers.”

The culture shift extends to families as well. Darden stressed that parental involvement is key to student success, stating, “Your involvement, support and follow-through is the difference.” Parents are encouraged to stay informed, create structured routines at home, maintain high expectations and communicate consistently with school staff.

DeSoto High School will also expand college and career readiness supports for upperclassmen, enhance transition programs for freshmen and sophomores, and invest in extracurricular growth across athletics, fine arts and academic clubs. Across the board, the focus is clear: excellence, accountability and unity.

“There is nothing we cannot do at #AccountabilityU,” Darden affirmed.

With a strong vision, clear expectations and unified leadership, DeSoto High School is positioned to deliver a transformative year of growth, achievement and pride.
