DeSoto ISD Football Coach Claude Mathis Refocuses Role to Champion Eagles Football
DeSoto ISD proudly announces a strategic leadership transition within its Athletics Department as Claude Mathis, the district’s Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, will step down from his administrative duties to focus exclusively on leading and elevating the nationally-ranked DeSoto Eagles Football Program.
This decision, proposed by Mathis himself, comes as part of a long-term vision to foster deeper, more focused leadership across all district athletics and to sustain the exceptional legacy of DeSoto High School football in one of the most competitive districts in the state at the highest competition class.
“This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one—for our athletes, our programs, and our future,” said Coach Claude Mathis. “DeSoto is a special place, and I want to give every ounce of my focus and energy to continuing the tradition of excellence we’ve built in our football program. By transitioning the day-to-day oversight of the district’s athletic programs to a dedicated administrator, we create space for specialized leadership that benefits every sport, every student-athlete, and every campus.”
Mathis, who has served in dual roles as both Head Football Coach and Athletic Director, was the only individual in the area holding both titles concurrently. Understanding the scope, responsibility, and strategic demands of the AD role, Mathis initiated the proposal to separate the positions—allowing the district to appoint an administrator whose sole focus will be managing the financial operations, compliance, facilities, and strategic planning for DeSoto ISD athletics.
“Coach Mathis is not only an elite coach—he’s a visionary leader who puts kids first,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, DeSoto ISD Superintendent of Schools. “This transition represents a forward-thinking, student-centered approach to building the next era of excellence in DeSoto ISD Athletics. With dedicated leadership at the campus and district levels, we can accelerate the momentum in our Triple-A Experience—focusing on Academics, Arts, and Athletics with clarity and commitment.”
As part of this shift, DeSoto ISD will soon launch a search for its next Athletic Director, a key leadership role tasked with driving the district's comprehensive athletic vision. Among their responsibilities will be overseeing athletic operations, managing facilities, and spearheading the development of new initiatives—including the proposed Student-Athlete Success Center, a component of the district’s potential 2025 bond package.
Coach Mathis’ Legacy of Excellence
Coach Claude Mathis was appointed Head Football Coach and Assistant Athletic Director of DeSoto ISD in January 2019 by then-Superintendent Dr. D’Andre Weaver. Mathis returned to DeSoto after coaching stints at Marshall ISD, where he led the program to back-to-back district championships and earned consecutive Coach of the Year honors, and Southern Methodist University, where he coached under Chad Morris from 2014–2017.
From 2008 to 2014, Mathis first served as DeSoto’s head coach, where he compiled a 74–18 record, led teams to state semifinal appearances, and positioned DeSoto as a nationally-ranked powerhouse, recognized by Sports Illustrated, Rivals, and MaxPreps. His teams consistently broke records, including setting a UIL Class 6A total offense record and averaging 551 yards per game, the highest in the nation at the time.
As a result of his success, Mathis was recognized at the legislative level. In recognition of his ongoing service, mentorship, and visionary leadership, Coach Mathis was selected by Texas State Senator Royce West to receive the Outstanding Texan Award for Senatorial District 23 during the Texas Legislative Black Caucus (TxLBC) 50th Anniversary Legislative Summit.
This prestigious award honors individuals for their commitment to uplifting, revitalizing, and empowering their communities. Mathis was recognized not only for his championship coaching record but also for his holistic development of student-athletes and extensive community engagement—including volunteering with the DeSoto Food Pantry, supporting the DeSoto Eagle Olympics, and mentoring youth through local churches.
Mathis’ impact goes beyond football. In 2012, he coached the DeSoto Boys Track Team to state championships in the 4x100 and 4x200, securing the overall state title that year. He has been named Coach of the Year in 2008, 2010, and 2012, and earned the Texas High School Coaches Association’s 2023-24 Coach of the Year Award, following a 16-0 season and second consecutive 6A Division II State Championship.
Looking Ahead
The new Athletics Director will play a crucial role in shaping the future of DeSoto ISD Athletics, with a strategic focus on equity, access, and achievement across all sports and campuses. This change is part of a broader initiative to align resources and leadership with the district’s long-term vision of academic, artistic, and athletic excellence.
