DeSoto Independent School District is thrilled to kick off another exciting academic year on Monday, August 11, 2025, and is calling on parents, alumni, community members, and partners to help set the tone for a successful school year by volunteering as First Day of School Greeters across its campuses.

As the district prepares to welcome scholars back into classrooms, DeSoto ISD invites community volunteers to serve as positive, encouraging greeters at the main entrances of campuses. Volunteers are asked to arrive 20–30 minutes prior to the start time of the school at the campus of their choice and should be ready to offer smiles, high-fives, claps, signs, and words of encouragement to students as they arrive.

“Our goal is to create an electric, welcoming atmosphere that lets our scholars know just how valued and supported they are,” said Kendal Harden, DeSoto ISD Parent and Family Engagement Specialist. “There’s power in our presence, and we want our scholars to feel our support from the moment they step onto campus.”

Volunteer greeters are encouraged to wear school-appropriate attire in DeSoto ISD colors—green, gold, or white—or clothing that reflects their professional affiliations to help spark future-focused conversations with students.

“This annual tradition reflects the spirit of our community,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools. “There’s no better way to affirm our scholars than to surround them with people cheering them on toward greatness. We want them to start this year with confidence and joy.”

Dr. Gene Morrow, Executive Director of Student and Staff Support Services, added, “Our scholars thrive when they see that their success matters to all of us. These simple gestures of encouragement on the first day can have a lasting impact throughout the year.”

To sign up as a volunteer greeter, visit the DeSoto ISD VOLY platform at https://desotoisd.voly.org/. Volunteers may select the specific campus where they wish to serve.
