DeSoto ISD Receives $4,000 Texas Trust Gives Foundation Grant to Launch Districtwide Uniform & Winterwear Closet
At its August 25, 2025, board meeting, the DeSoto ISD Board of Trustees formally accepted a $4,000 Community Impact Grant from the Texas Trust Gives Foundation to support the establishment of a districtwide Uniform and Winterwear Closet. The initiative will provide essential clothing—including school uniforms and coats—for more than 500 students annually, prioritizing scholars who are economically disadvantaged, in foster care, or experiencing homelessness.
This effort directly addresses barriers to attendance, learning, and student dignity, ensuring that all scholars have the clothing resources they need to feel confident and ready to engage in school. The project will roll out in two phases: Phase 1 begins this school year with the purchase of uniforms and coats to establish the initial inventory, which will be managed by DeSoto ISD Student Support Services. Phase 2 will launch in the following school year, focusing on annual community restocking drives and scaling the resource to meet growing needs.
“This grant represents far more than financial support—it represents a lifeline for many of our students,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools. “At DeSoto ISD, we are committed to removing barriers to learning, and the Uniform and Winterwear Closet ensures that our scholars are equipped not only for academic success but also with the dignity and belonging they deserve.”
The initiative will be managed through the district’s Student and Staff Support Services Department, which will oversee inventory, distribution, and long-term sustainability efforts.
“We know that something as simple as a clean uniform or a warm coat can make a major difference in a child’s ability to come to school consistently and focus on learning,” said Dr. Gene Morrow, Executive Director of Student and Staff Support Services. “This grant allows us to meet critical needs immediately while laying the foundation for an ongoing community-supported resource.”
DeSoto ISD’s emphasis on literacy, academic growth, and the Triple A Experience of Academics, Arts, and Athletics also depends on ensuring scholars’ basic needs are met.
“Our district’s mission is not just about teaching academics—it’s about ensuring our scholars can fully participate in every aspect of their education,” said Dr. Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer. “By addressing these essential needs, we are fostering equity, engagement, and the confidence students need to succeed.”
The Texas Trust Gives Foundation issued this grant through its Community Impact Grant Cycle, a funding opportunity separate from its Financial Literacy Grant Cycle. Through this support, DeSoto ISD will continue strengthening its student-centered efforts and building community partnerships to sustain critical resources.
