DeSoto ISD Fine Arts Family Night Draws 200+ Families, Showcases District’s Commitment to Arts Education

DeSoto Independent School
District recently welcomed more than 200 families from across the district to
its first-ever Fine Arts Family Night series, a soft launch of the
district’s new Fine Arts vision. The event created an evening of creativity,
connection, and pride while highlighting the vital role of arts education in
shaping well-rounded student experiences.
The DeSoto ISD Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) played a key role in theevents, connecting with
families, securing new memberships, and raffling off supply gift baskets to
staff who supported the event. Elementary students also received backpacks
filled with essential school supplies, reinforcing the district’s commitment to
equipping scholars for success.
Families
were immersed in a hands-on exploration of Fine Arts that allowed them to
experience what students engage in daily, including:
- Harmonizing and singing solfege scales
- Drawing
realistic faces and creating arts and crafts projects
- Reading music
rhythms and performing five-note songs on marimbas
- Practicing wind
instrument techniques
- Learning
customized line dances and lyrical 32-count dances that energized the room
“The evening was not only
a celebration of creativity but also a powerful demonstration of how the arts
can transform learning,” said Twynette Anderson, DeSoto ISD Director of Fine
Arts. “Fine Arts education fosters critical thinking, discipline, and
self-expression, while enhancing academic performance and intellectual
development. Our staff’s passion and our students’ engagement proved that Fine
Arts are not just enrichment—they are essential to the holistic growth of every
scholar.”
By opening their
classrooms and studios, teachers gave parents a first-hand look at the
innovative and engaging ways Fine Arts instruction supports student
development. Families also provided valuable feedback that will help refine
future programming while strengthening community buy-in for the district’s
long-term arts vision.
DeSoto ISD Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Usamah Rodders emphasized the role of Fine Arts
within the district’s holistic approach to education:
“At DeSoto ISD, our Triple A
Experience—Academics, Arts, and Athletics—ensures that scholars receive a
well-rounded foundation for lifelong success. The investment in Fine Arts is a
direct reflection of our commitment to nurturing creativity, leadership, and
confidence in our students. We want our families and community to know that the
arts are a vital part of who we are as a district and where we are headed.”
DeSoto ISD’s Fine Arts
Family Night series not only showcased student and teacher talent but also
positioned the arts as a central pillar of the district’s educational mission.
The momentum generated by this inaugural event will help drive retention, recruitment,
and long-term growth as DeSoto ISD continues to expand its vision for Fine Arts
education.
