DeSoto ISD Celebrates Future Farmers of America Week, Spotlighting CTE Programs and Student Achievement

DeSoto Independent School District (DISD) is proud to observe Future Farmers of America (FFA) Week, February 21-28, recognizing the accomplishments of students engaged in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs focused on agriculture, veterinary science, and food science.
Students across the district gain hands-on experience in animal husbandry at the DeSoto ISD Agriculture Farm Center, an outdoor classroom dedicated to focused instruction. Under the guidance of instructors, students develop skills in livestock management, veterinary practices, and agricultural science. Programs in Veterinary Science and Food Science, including Culinary Arts, complement these experiences by preparing students for careers in health, food, and agricultural industries.
Melinda Pugh, Director of Career and Technical Education for DeSoto ISD, shared, “FFA Week is an opportunity to highlight the exceptional learning our students experience in CTE programs. From caring for livestock to mastering culinary techniques, our students are building real-world skills that prepare them for college and career success.”
Devanta Daniels, 2025 DeSoto High School Teacher of the Year and Agriculture Science Instructor, added, “Working with students at the Agriculture Farm Center is incredibly rewarding. They not only learn technical skills but also develop leadership, responsibility, and teamwork—core tenets of FFA.”
Nikena Madison, 2024 DeSoto High School Teacher of the Year and Culinary Arts Instructor, noted, “Our Food Science and Culinary Arts programs provide students with a hands-on education in food preparation, safety, and nutrition. FFA Week celebrates the dedication of these students as they apply classroom lessons in real-world contexts.”
Through FFA Week, DeSoto ISD reaffirms its commitment to providing innovative, experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for success in high-demand career fields.
