During its regular Board of Trustees meeting held Monday, February 23, 2026, the DeSoto Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Brent S. Mitchell as Interim Superintendent of Schools.

Mitchell brings more than 25 years of progressive leadership experience in K–12 education, with a demonstrated record of driving fiscal responsibility, strengthening school safety systems, and cultivating positive, high-performing district cultures. His leadership experience across large, complex public school districts positions him well to guide DeSoto ISD during this critical period of transition.

Most recently, Mitchell served as Acting Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Support Services/Chief of Staff for the Ferguson-Florissant School District (MO), where he directed districtwide operations, student services, and financial stewardship for a $163 million budget and more than 1,500 employees. In this role, he led a strategic, data-driven financial realignment that resulted in a $13.7 million reduction in district expenditures, strengthening fiscal stability while protecting instructional priorities and student services.

Under his leadership, the district also implemented systemwide improvements in school safety, student support services, and campus culture, including expanded restorative practices, strengthened Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and redesigned student conduct procedures. These efforts resulted in significant reductions in student discipline incidents, improved attendance outcomes, and enhanced school climate across 10 campuses.

Mitchell additionally led efforts to improve academic performance and organizational effectiveness, advancing early literacy outcomes, increasing graduation rates to 93 percent, and expanding college and career readiness initiatives, all while maintaining strong accountability systems and stakeholder engagement.

Earlier in his career, Mitchell held senior leadership roles in instructional strategy, campus administration, and district operations across Texas, Missouri, and Arkansas, developing deep expertise in strategic planning, talent development, budget management, and instructional coherence.

Board President Chasiti McKissic stated, “Mitchell’s proven ability to lead complex organizations through financial realignment, strengthen school safety systems, and rebuild culture makes him uniquely qualified to serve DeSoto ISD during this pivotal moment. His experience aligns directly with the district’s immediate priorities, and the Board is confident in his leadership.”

Mitchell holds two master’s degrees in Educational Leadership and Teaching and Curriculum from Harding University, an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Arkansas, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He is currently completing his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership and Administration from Liberty University, with anticipated completion in 2026.

As Interim Superintendent, Mitchell will oversee all district operations and lead the district’s strategic focus on financial sustainability, safe and supportive learning environments, and positive district culture.

“I am honored by the Board’s trust and committed to serving the DeSoto ISD community with integrity, transparency, and urgency,” said Mitchell. “Together, we will focus on stabilizing operations, strengthening safety, and fostering a culture where students and staff can thrive.”

The Board of Trustees noted that it will host opportunities for the community to meet and engage with Mitchell in the coming weeks.

Additional information regarding the district’s long-term superintendent search process and next steps will be shared with the community as they become available.
