Special Education Paraprofessional | McCowan Middle School

Meet Johnerica Major, a dedicated special education paraprofessional at McCowan Middle School whose passion for advocacy, integrity, and student empowerment drives everything she does. With five years of experience in education and now in her second year with DeSoto ISD, Johnerica is committed to creating a learning environment where every child feels valued, supported, and capable.

Integrity stands at the center of Johnerica’s work. She approaches every day with purpose and conviction, ensuring that she advocates for her students while upholding the highest standards.

“Integrity guides my work because I advocate for my students and maintain the standards they deserve.”

Her commitment ensures that each student receives the care and support necessary to thrive academically and socially.

Her “Why”-Supporting the Whole Child While Building the Future of DeSoto ISD

Johnerica’s personal mission is deeply rooted in belief and compassion. “I want my students to feel seen, supported, and capable — even when the world underestimates them.”

This powerful “why” fuels her dedication to uplifting students with diverse learning needs and celebrating their unique strengths.

In her role, Johnerica plays an essential part in shaping a future that includes every learner. By supporting students who learn differently, she ensures equitable access to education and opportunity.

Johnerica’s approach extends beyond academics. She is intentional about meeting her students’ emotional, social, and personal needs, offering comprehensive support that strengthens confidence and nurtures growth.

Johnerica is most proud of helping students recognize their potential. Each milestone, big or small, is a reminder of the impact she makes daily.

Excellence, Endurance, and Inspiration

Excellence, for Johnerica, means showing up intentionally for her students and ensuring their success through patience, encouragement, and dedication. During challenges, Johnerica remains anchored by remembering her purpose and the students who depend on her guidance.

“When things get difficult, I stay grounded by remembering why I started this work.”

Johnerica is inspired by educators who are unwaveringly committed to ensuring every student succeeds. Their dedication motivates her to grow and serve with the same level of care and conviction.

She is the proud mother of an autistic son — an experience that has deepened her empathy, shaped her understanding, and strengthened her passion for special education.

Looking ahead, she is excited for the future of DeSoto ISD, especially the district’s commitment to creating diverse classrooms and embracing all learners.
