At McCowan Middle School, eighth‑grader Diana Cruz stands out as a scholar, leader, and role model committed to living the PRIDE value of Excellence in every space she enters. Her teachers describe her as a student who gives her absolute best — not for recognition, but because she genuinely wants to grow, improve, and set a positive example for others. Whether in the classroom or on the cheer mat, Diana approaches each day with the same determination and positive attitude.

As a dedicated member of the McCowan Cheer Program, Diana demonstrates remarkable discipline and passion. She recently began taking tumbling technique classes to strengthen her performance skills, motivated by her dream of earning a spot on the DeSoto High School Cheer Team. This willingness to invest in herself speaks volumes about her work ethic and long‑term goals.

Academically, Diana is just as focused. With the encouragement of her family — the people she says inspire her to “aim high and reach for the impossible” — she is working toward acceptance into the DeSoto High School Early College Program, a major milestone that aligns with her future aspirations. Diana ultimately hopes to attend college and continue on to law school, where she plans to pursue her goal of becoming an attorney.

Diana’s journey at CMMS has been one of transformation and maturity. After overcoming a challenging start, she has completely reshaped her habits, mindset, and approach to school. Staff members, including Dashya McCuin, have played an important role in supporting her growth, but it is Diana’s own resilience and commitment that have propelled her forward.

She defines success as “being yourself and doing what makes you happy,” a mindset reflected in her leadership style. Known for uplifting her peers, Diana strives to help others become the best version of themselves — a true mark of an Eagle leader.
