DeSoto ISD Scholar Benjamin Pearson Makes History at Dallas Regional Spelling Bee
DeSoto Independent School District proudly celebrates Benjamin Pearson, a 7th-grade student at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet School, for his historic achievement at the 68th Annual Dallas Regional Spelling Bee (DRSB), presented by the Dallas Sports Commission at WFAA studios in downtown Dallas. Pearson, who has competed in the district’s spelling bee since its re-emergence in 2023, now stands to become the furthest-advancing scholar in district history.
Pearson joined co-champions, scholars from Prosper ISD and Coppell ISD, as the top three finalists advancing to represent North and East Texas at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, scheduled for May 26–28, 2026, in National Harbor, Maryland.
“This is an extraordinary moment for Benjamin and for DeSoto ISD,” said Yolanda Hanspard, Principal of Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet School. “Benjamin’s dedication, focus, and love of learning exemplify the values we strive to instill in all our scholars. From the district spelling bee to this historic achievement, his journey inspires every student to aim high and persist.”
This year’s regional competition featured 27 of North and East Texas’ top spellers, selected from approximately 100,000 students across more than 840 schools. For the first time, Dr. Jacques Bailly, 1980 National Spelling Bee Champion and Scripps National Spelling Bee Head Pronouncer, brought his expertise in Greek, Roman philosophy, etymology, and ancient languages to the Dallas stage.
The DRSB concluded with Dudala correctly spelling “resveratrol” and Manjunath following with “socius,” earning co-champion titles. Pearson, named the third finalist, now moves forward with an all-expense-paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee alongside his guardian, with flights courtesy of Southwest Airlines.
“Benjamin’s achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and preparation,” said Dr. Brent Mitchell, DeSoto ISD Superintendent. “His journey from our district spelling bee to the national stage highlights the extraordinary talent within DeSoto ISD and reminds us of the incredible potential of our scholars when given support, opportunity, and encouragement.”
The Dallas Regional Spelling Bee will stream on WFAA+ on May 9. WFAA+ is available for free download on Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV devices.
