With the new partnership between DeSoto ISD and the City of DeSoto, the Community Garden at the EJ Morgan Agriculture Project Center complex on Hampton Road in DeSoto is set to yield an even greater harvest and access to fresh food for the community with the help of local volunteers.

Through the work of the district’s Plant Services staff member, Mr. Joe White and several local volunteers including students and their families and staff, the garden remains one of the many unique assets of the district and city that supplies fresh vegetables to several residents and individuals, especially during the fall and spring harvest months.

Most recently, the district staff made a delivery to the DeSoto Seniors at the DeSoto Senior Center with bags of fresh greens just in time to support their holiday meals with family and friends.

As we enter the mid-winter months, it is now time to begin prepping the grounds for the spring planting season and volunteers are needed to help with maintenance and cultivation.

The first meeting for all interested individuals is Thursday, Jan. 12 at 9 a.m. at the garden site in the EJ Morgan Agriculture Center. Planting is scheduled to begin on the MLK Holiday on Jan. 16. Regular garden maintenance schedules will be Tuesday and Thursday of each week (morning or evening shift) until the harvest season in early June.

All interested individuals can sign up via Voly at www.desotoisd.voly.org. Please contact the DeSoto ISD Community Engagement coordinator at 972-223-6666, if additional information is needed regarding this volunteer opportunity.
