Prior to the May 15, 2023, regular board meeting, the DeSoto Independent School District Board of Trustees held a special-called meeting following the May Election to install new trustees and elect officers.
Outgoing trustees Karen Daniel and Dr. Tiffany Clark thanked the community for their support during their respective service tenures. Daniel, who served nine years, or three terms on the Board, and Clark, who served six years, or two terms on the Board, were praised in a community farewell reception on Thursday, May 11, 2023, and were joined by family and close friends in their final act of service in opening the May 15 meeting.
Dallas County JP Precinct Thomas G. Jones hosted the swearing-in ceremony for the installation of the new trustees Karen R. Lacy, Place 3, and James Durham, Place 5; as well as returning trustee Abe C. Cooper, Jr., Place 4.
Following the installation ceremony, board members nominated and voted on appointments for new officers which resulted as follows:
- President: Chasiti McKissic
- Vice President: Abe Cooper, Jr.
- Secretary: Traci McNairy
- TASA/TASB Delegate: DeAndrea Fleming
- TASA/TASB Alternative: Cynthia Watson-Banks
Following the assignment of the newly-appointed officers, the Board completed the remainder of the agenda which included updates regarding student achievement and progress monitoring; board and administrative corrective action plans; and financial and budgetary updates among other agenda items.
The May 15, 2023, special-called and regular board meetings combined the regular business meeting and the progress monitoring meeting that normally occur separately each month due to the DHS Class of 2023 graduation ceremony scheduled to take place on Monday, May 22, 2023, at the University of Texas at Arlington.
